Anxiety of going to the dentist is a huge issue for most people. There's not a lot of people that enjoy it, but it's a necessary thing. And so, trying to make it as pleasant as possible for our patients, starting off with just establishing a relationship of trust where they know me as a person, they feel comfortable with me, they understand that I take a lot of education and I know what I'm doing. Then, on top of that, using different things that we have available, whether it's oral sedation or medications that we give before appointments: using nitrous oxide.
Some patients like to have music on while they're having treatments done. Some patients like to watch TV while they're having treatment as a distraction. We use a lot of different things, but just trying to make it as pleasant as possible to take the edge off of that anxiety and hopefully once they've experience that a couple of times, they realize that this is no big deal, it actually can be fun. We try to get as close to fun as we can.
At our Tulsa, OK dental office, we offer two types of sedation dentistry: nitrous oxide and oral medication.
- Nitrous oxide is better known as laughing gas. You breathe it in through a small mask placed over your nose. The advantage of nitrous oxide is that it works as soon as you start breathing it in. When you stop, the effects go away fast. That means you should be able to drive home after a dental treatment with nitrous oxide.
- Oral medication is sedation in pill form. You take the pill one hour before coming to your appointment. Because its effects can last a few hours, you will need to find someone to drive you to and from our office. Because oral medication is stronger than nitrous oxide, it can help when your anxiety and worry is moderate to severe.
Both options induce a relaxed feeling. If you are worried about getting dental work done, these will make those worries disappear. You’ll be relaxed and comfortable throughout your treatment.
How Conscious Sedation Works
Both nitrous oxide and oral medication are considered conscious sedation dentistry methods. This means you will most likely be awake throughout the treatment. This way, your dentist can ask you questions and check to make sure you’re not in any pain. Falling asleep won’t let that happen, which is why conscious sedation is usually the better option. Although you will remain conscious, your dental anxiety will still go away.
Respectful Staff Eases Fear
Sometimes, the bad memory that makes you feel anxious about the dentist has nothing to do with dental treatments. Some offices see you as a number or an insurance plan to bill, and that’s it. From the moment you walk in the door, you’ll be treated with warmth and respect. We always try to accommodate your needs.
