You see them every time you walk down the toothpaste aisle. Dozens of products that all proclaim they will give you a whiter smile. Teeth whitening is certainly popular. What should you do if you really want to remove stains from your teeth?
Your best best is professional teeth whitening, like the TouchWhite™ and Zoom products we offer for patients at our Tulsa dentist office. Teeth whitening is one of the many kinds of cosmetic dentistry we provide, and it can be combined with other treatments to really improve the appearance of your smile.

Kinds Of Teeth Whitening Products
The American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs took an in-depth look at self-proclaimed “teeth whitening” products a few years ago. As more and more of these products came on the market, they wanted patients to know if they really could be effective.
The council divided whitening products into two categories — whitening toothpaste and bleaching products. What they found may disappoint you.
First, whitening toothpaste can remove surface stains from your teeth. To put it another way, almost any toothpaste could be considered a whitening product under this criteria.
If you are looking to remove the stains that develop after years of morning coffees, soft drinks, and pasta, then whitening toothpaste is not going to get deep enough for your needs.
Bleaching products contain hydrogen peroxide or something that breaks down to hydrogen peroxide. This is what allows whitening gels and strips to go deeper than the surface stains to make a bigger difference in the color of your teeth.
Will over-the-counter whitening products work? They will work better than whitening toothpaste, but they are not as powerful as professional whitening products.
There are risks to using whitening products. Temporary teeth sensitivity is a common complaint. Likewise, overuse or misuse of these products can actually lead to problems, which is why the ADA council recommends consulting with a dentist like Dr. Cobble before using any whitening product.

Professional Teeth Whitening
Professional teeth whitening products can contain 7 to 11 times higher concentrations of whitening agents than over-the-counter products. As a result, professional whitening products can products visible results much faster.
It’s sort of like the difference between trying to clean your driveway with a pressure washer or with a garden hose. They use the same stuff, but one is clearly more powerful and more effective for the job at hand. You could have noticeably whiter teeth in a single visit to our Tulsa dentist office.
If you prefer to do your teeth whitening on your schedule, we can create custom-fitted trays for you. Then we will provide you with whitening gel and instructions on how to use it. This won’t work as quickly as an in-office treatment. However, you will see better results in a few weeks than you would with anything you can buy at the store.
Contact Masterpiece Smiles to find out which of our teeth whitening options will work best for you.
Will Teeth Whitening Work For Everyone?
The answer, unfortunately, is no. While professional teeth whitening is a good at removing stains, it is not as effective on other kinds of discolorations.
Illnesses, injuries, side effects of medications, and tooth decay can cause teeth to change colors as well. If you already have dental fillings or dental crowns, whitening won’t work on those, which could make your smile have inconsistent coloring.
In those cases, we may recommend dental veneers instead. Dental veneers can give you a bright, white smile, too. They just do it in a different way than teeth whitening products.
In a way, dental veneers are similar to fake fingernails. Dental veneers are attached to the front of your teeth. When they are bonded in place, they can transform the appearance of your smile.
There is a very important difference between fake fingernails and veneers. Fake fingernails can last for a few weeks. Dental veneers can last for years with proper care and maintenance.
Without talking to one of our dentists, you may try a commercial teeth whitening product only to learn that it does little to improve your smile.
