Some of our favorite patients started out as kids so small they needed a lift into our dental chairs and now they’re carrying their kids into our office! Dr. Cobble cares for your children’s smiles with the same gentle touch they use when treating their own children and grandchildren.
As your trusted resource for quality dental care, we’ve pulled together a quick guide for caring for your children’s teeth. For more specific information about your child’s needs, call us today at 918-925-9687 and schedule an appointment or ask any questions you might have.
Your Child’s First Dental Visit
The ADA recommends bringing your child in for their first dental visit within 6 months of getting their first tooth and we agree. Celebrate your child’s first birthday with a visit to Masterpiece Smiles – even mini-smiles deserve good dental care!
At your child’s first dental exam, we’ll be able to tell you if there are any early issues you need to be aware of and talk about proper diet and dental care. Parents who skip out on this early visit can put their baby’s new teeth in jeopardy for early cavities.
Introducing your child to the dentist at a young age is a great way to sidestep dental anxiety that can follow them into adulthood and beyond. At your child’s first dental appointment, we may do something simple like count their teeth, just to get them comfortable with the dental chair experience.
Brushing & Flossing For Kids
As many as 85% of adults have some level of gum disease, save your child from this fate by establishing good flossing habits early.
You’ll want to begin flossing your child’s teeth as soon as they begin to have side-by-side teeth. Be very gentle with the floss, don’t exert too much pressure, you wouldn’t want to harm your baby’s gums in any way. Use a different section of floss between every tooth, just like you would with your own teeth.
As your child reaches age 7 and begins to floss on their own, you may find that floss picks make flossing easier. There are also flavored flosses available for children to make flossing time fun for the whole family. This is also around the age your child can begin using mouthwash, any earlier and they may swallow it.
When should you begin cleaning your child’s teeth? As soon as they have teeth to clean. Begin with a finger wrapped with a soft cloth and when advised by your dentist, progress to a soft-bristled toothbrush.
You’ll begin brushing your child’s first teeth with a rice-grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and by the time they’re three, you’ll be using a pea-sized amount.
Taking good care of your child’s baby teeth will prevent cavities that can be especially painful for little ones. Masterpiece Smiles has fluoride treatments and varnishes that can make your child’s teeth nice and strong. Strong teeth are less susceptible to tooth decay.
Fluoride varnishes have even been shown to reverse the beginning signs of early cavities in children, often referred to as baby bottle tooth decay. To avoid baby bottle tooth decay, brush your child’s teeth, limit the consumption of sugary drinks, and don’t share toothbrushes or spoons with your child or you could pass on the harmful bacteria that may be in your mouth.
Another preventive treatment Masterpiece Smiles can offer your family is tooth sealants. Tooth sealants are a thin layer of plastic that seals off the groovy surface of your child’s tooth so bacteria can’t cause damage.
