Straight teeth are the cornerstone of a beautiful smile. Our Tulsa, Oklahoma, dental office is dedicated to straightening teeth with subtle, comfortable options. I can tell you that many of my patients come to me worried about their teeth. Who doesn’t want straight, beautiful teeth? That’s a rhetorical question.
The problem is that many patients believe that the only way to treat crooked teeth is with traditional braces. Not true! It’s the 21st Century. We can use a system known as Invisalign to move the teeth into a more appropriate location. Today I want to share some of the differences between Invisalign and metal braces. Metal braces are ideal for patients who have major orthodontic or bite issues, but in many ways, Invisalign can be better than traditional orthodontics.
Here are a few ways Invisalign is different from metal braces.
Invisalign has no fixed brackets or wires. Traditional braces are fixed to the teeth. Braces usually involve the use of metal brackets and wires, but these materials can be made from ceramic or other materials. Invisalign uses none of these materials. The plastic trays are removable, making it easier for eating and cleaning your teeth. Even though the appliances are removable, we ask that you wear the aligners for about 20 hours a day. Not following this treatment protocol can lead to poor treatment results or prolonged treatment.
Invisalign is virtually invisible. Let’s face it, braces stick out like a sore thumb. Even if we use subtle, tooth-colored material, braces are hard to hide. The smile is one of the first things people notice about you. Do you want them to spend that time staring at your braces? When you use Invisalign, it’s possible to complete your treatment without anyone even knowing.
Invisalign takes less time than traditional braces. Treatment with traditional metal braces can take anywhere from two to three years, depending on your dental needs. That’s partly because metal braces can repair serious orthodontic issues. It’s also because metal braces are designed to move the root and crown of the tooth over the course of two different stages. Invisalign is not as comprehensive as traditional braces, so it takes much less time to complete. Most Invisalign patients can complete their treatment in anywhere from 12 to 18 months.
Invisalign is less invasive than traditional braces. If you’ve had braces, you probably can remember exactly how it felt. You remember the wire tightenings or the feel of the new brackets. Some patients experience sensitivity for days after a tightening. Sometimes you feel as if you cannot open your mouth after the tightening. With Invisalign, you’ll receive new aligners about once every two weeks. You also don’t have to worry about having brackets cemented to the teeth.
Invisalign will fit in with your professional or private life. Not only are metal braces distracting, but they make you look like a pre-teen. If you’re an adult, I’m guessing you don’t want to look like a pre-teen. This is especially true for working professionals. Invisalign is a system that can help your smile and fit in with your life. You don’t have to worry about someone spotting your orthodontic treatment — or getting food caught in your appliance.
