What Are Dental Crowns And Bridges?
Let’s consider what restorative dentistry is meant to do. It restores damaged teeth and replaces missing ones. Ideally, you will keep all your teeth for your entire life.
Nevertheless, people do lose teeth for a range of reasons: accidents, injuries, poor oral hygiene, or waiting too long to visit the dentist. Please know that everyone at Masterpiece Smiles wants to help you. Regardless of the reason that you are seeking restorative dental care, we will do whatever we can to bring back your smile.
A dental crown is made to replace the natural crown of your teeth. Historically, metals like gold have been used to created dental crowns. With advances in dentistry, we now have materials that restore the function of damaged teeth as well as looking like real teeth.
A dental crown can be used to repair teeth that have large cavities, that are broken, and that are cracked. You also may get a dental crown as part of a root canal treatment or to replace a tooth that has fallen out or been extracted.
Dental bridges are created to fill gaps in your smile. Each bridge is created by bonding multiple dental crowns together. Therefore — like crowns — dental bridges can be used bring back the appearance and the function of your teeth.

How To Get A Dental Crown
The basic process for replacing a damaged tooth is the same regardless of whether you have a broken or cracked tooth, tooth decay, or a tooth that has been worn down.
One of our dentists will need to create a support to hold the dental crown in place. We do this by removing the parts of your tooth that are weak or damaged. By doing this, we preserve more of the healthy parts of your tooth.
Your dental crown will be created to match the color and the size of the rest of your natural teeth. This way it will blend in with the rest of your smile. The dental crown is bonded to your tooth so you can feel confident when eating with it as well.
For someone with an infected tooth, the procedure is slightly different. To remove an infection, you will need a root canal treatment. (Don’t worry, it’s not painful when you have it done at Masterpiece Smiles.)
After the infection is removed from inside your tooth, a member of our team will fill the tooth with at special filling material. At that point, the tooth is ready to be sealed.
A dental crown is often the best way to do this. The crown both protects the tooth against a new infection and restores its shape and size.
There is one more time when you may need a dental crown, but that leads into our next topic.
How To Replace Missing Teeth
Whether you are missing one tooth or multiple teeth, you may get a dental bridge to close the opening in your smile.
As we mentioned above, a dental bridge is formed by fusing dental crowns together. For someone missing one tooth, the bridge would consist of three crowns.
The outside crowns are called abutment crowns. They are bonded to the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Those teeth are reshaped in the same way we described above.
The crown in the middle of the bridge is called a pontic. If you need to replace more than one tooth, another pontic can be added in the middle of the dental bridge.
As an alternative, you could have a dental crown placed on a dental implant. An implant is a titanium cylinder that is placed directly into your jaw. This replaces the root of your missing tooth and provides the support for your crown.
And if you need to replace multiple teeth, you could place a dental bridge on dental implants, too.
