To close Gum Disease Awareness Month, we want to mention an innovative “solution” that has helped many of our patients with chronic gum disease. It’s less invasive than surgery, and if you watch the video below, you can learn about its potentially pleasant side effect.
Dr. Cobble discusses this treatment for periodontal disease at our Tulsa, OK, dentist office. Using a solution placed in special trays (similar to mouthguards), we can deliver medicine exactly where it needs to go to attack the bacteria that cause gum disease.

A breakthrough study five or six years ago showed that we could treat gum disease by creating customized trays that the patient can use on a daily basis, put a solution in them, place it in the mouth, top and bottom arches at the same time, push on it. That forces that solution into any gum pockets where they have problems and kills the bacteria. The study shows that kills 99.98% of the bacteria—the pathogens that cause gum disease—kills them within less than 20 days. We put people that have a tendency to have gum problems in those trays. If they'll use them, they will come back in two weeks much, much healthier, bleeding, puffy gum tissue is firmed up—gotten pink. I always tease there is one side effect: it will also make your teeth whiter. Most people don't mind that.
In fact, they love it. The first time I gave those trays to a gentleman who had extreme gum problems and his gum tissue was amazingly healthier, so that's not unusual. People that have a tendency to have gum problems sometimes have been seeing a gum specialist every three months and still losing ground. Those people, if we get them on these trays, that will arrest their problems and very gently because all they're having to do is put these soft trays in and wear them for 10 minutes a day to get that under control. I've been using it for over five years and for five years, I was the only dentist in Tulsa certified to dispense that.
Every time I bring on a new staff person and they see the results, the new hygienist or whatever, they're blown away by what a wonderful, kind treatment that is, and effective.
