Dental veneers are ultra-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored ceramic that cover the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance.

Dental veneers are bonded to the front of your teeth so they cover any cosmetic problem you have with those teeth. For example, if your teeth are stained from drinking coffee, the veneers will cover that up. You’ll be left with a white, bright smile.
Your teeth can get chipped or cracked over the years. Sometimes your natural enamel will have ridges in it. Dental veneers will hide flaws like that as well. They will prevent that kind of damage from getting worse.
You may have some flaws in the positioning of your teeth. You may have a gap between two teeth. We can make your dental veneers a little wider than your teeth and close those gaps up. If you have a crooked tooth or a tooth with irregular edges, dental veneers can correct those too. As soon as your veneers are placed, your smile will look amazing.
Veneers are routinely used to fix:
- Discolored teeth.
- Worn down teeth
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth
- Teeth with gaps between them
How Veneers Are Done
Here’s what you can expect as far as treatment if you decide on dental veneers:
Diagnosis and treatment planning. At this stage, we’ll ask you about the results you want to achieve. Dr. Cobble will examine your teeth to make sure dental veneers are a good option for you and talk about what the procedure will involve. He will go over any limitations of veneers. He may take X-rays and make impressions of your mouth and teeth.
Preparation. Veneers are wafer-thin but we still have to remove a little enamel in order to apply them. Dr. Cobble will remove about 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the surface of your teeth. This is about the thickness of the veneers that will be added. Next, he will make a model or impression of your teeth. This model is sent out to a dental laboratory, which which will make your veneers.
Bonding. Once the veneers come back from the lab, Dr. Cobble will temporarily place it on your teeth to examine their fit and color. He will repeatedly remove and trim the veneers in order to achieve the proper fit.
Your teeth will then be cleaned, polished, and etched (this roughens the surface of the tooth for better bonding). He will apply a special cement to the veneers and then place them on your teeth. He’ll then use a special light beam, which will activate chemicals in the cement, causing it to harden very quickly.
Lastly, Dr. Cobble will remove any excess cement. He will then evaluate your bite and make any final adjustments to the veneers as necessary.
The Prepless Veneers Option
As we said earlier, with regular veneers we need to remove a portion of your enamel for the procedure. Masterpiece Smiles also offers something we call e.max prepless veneers. These veneers are made from a special material that’s really strong. They can be made even thinner than traditional veneers, which means that we don’t have to remove any enamel.
Some Things To Keep In Mind About Veneers
Veneers offer the following advantages:
- They provide a natural tooth appearance.
- They are stain resistant.
- They can brighten and whiten dark teeth.
- Gum tissue tolerates porcelain well.
- Teeth beneath veneers can still decay.
- If you have tooth decay or active gum disease, those would have to be fixed before the veneers are done. Veneers may not work if you have weakened teeth or an inadequate amount of existing enamel on the tooth surface.
- Individuals who clench and grind their teeth are poor candidates for porcelain veneers, as these activities can cause the veneers to crack or chip.
Do Dental Veneers Require Special Care?
Dental veneers do not require any special care. Continue to follow good oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash as you normally would.
