Family Dentistry For A Good Foundation
Oral care should start as soon as your child is born.
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, you should wipe your child’s gums with a moist cloth a couple times per day even before he or she has teeth.
When that first tooth does emerge, you will want to start gently brushing with a tiny bit of toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Once someone has teeth, then he or she can develop cavities.
When your child has two teeth that are next to one another, you should start flossing gently between his or her teeth as well.
We encourage you to bring your child to Masterpiece Smiles by his or her third birthday. Most children will have most of their teeth by this time. This also gives our dentists an opportunity to check their oral health and to address any problems that we may see before they become something bigger.
When you call 918-925-9687 to make your appointment, be sure to let us know if this if your child’s first dental visit. We want to help make this a positive experience for him or her.
Family Dentistry At Home
We certainly hope that your family will come to our dentist office in Tulsa, OK, for regular professional dental cleanings. However, we also want to encourage you to develop a good oral hygiene routine at home.
For the first few years of your children’s lives, you will need to do the brushing and flossing for them. Around age 3, many children will start to show an interest in doing things for themselves.
This is a chance to teach them to brush and floss, although we would encourage you to observe them until you feel comfortable that they understand what to do.
You will want your child a soft-bristled toothbrush that is the right size for them. Teach them to place a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on their toothbrush. (Coincidentally, this is enough toothpaste for parents, too.)
Each person should brush for two minutes, twice a day, while being sure to scrub their teeth on all sides. Finish by scrubbing the tongue, spitting out the toothpaste, and rinsing the toothbrush.
When flossing, the important thing is to clean each tooth on both sides and to clean beneath the gumline. Dental floss is the most common tool used for this purpose. If this proves difficult, then you may want to get flossers (which have short handles on one end and a strand of floss on the other) or water flossers instead.
It’s important to floss daily to remove plaque and food particles that can get stuck. Your toothbrush is great for cleaning your teeth, but it can’t always get the harder to reach places.
When you make your next appointment at Masterpiece Smiles, please feel free to ask any questions about your home oral care routine.
Family Dentistry And Older Children
After your children lose their baby teeth, their adult teeth will begin to emerge. This is a critical time in their oral health, and it can lead to some important decisions for your as a parent.
During your visits for routine dental cleanings, our team of professionals will keep a close eye on how your child’s teeth erupt. If we notice some alignment problems, we can discuss what options are available for you.
We can discuss orthodontic options, if needed, including Invisalign®. This system uses aligners made of clear plastic to gently push teeth so they become straight.
Family Dentistry For Everyone
We want you and your children to have healthy smiles for a long time. That’s we encourage you to make regular visits to Masterpiece Smiles.
Regular professional cleanings can help prevent long-term oral health issues. This includes identifying problems in the early stages when they can be treated more easily.
